What a free society offers to the individual is much more than what he would be able to do if only he were free.

Friedrich Hayek

The motives by which we act are inscribed in our intimate structure as mammals, as hunters, as social beings: reason illuminates these connections, it does not generate them. We are not, in the first place, reasoning beings. We may perhaps become so, more or less, in the second. In the first instance, we are driven by a thirst for life, by hunger, by the need to love, by the instinct to find our place in human society... The second instance does not even exist without the first. Reason arbitrates between instincts but uses the very same instincts as primary criteria in its arbitration.

Carlo Rovelli

I believe in no God, no invisible man in the sky. But there is something more powerful than each of us, a combination of our efforts, a Great Chain of industry that unites us. But it is only when we struggle in our own interest that the chain pulls society in the right direction. The chain is too powerful and too mysterious for any government to guide. Any man who tells you different either has his hand in your pocket, or a pistol to your neck.

We live in a society where people are uncomfortable with not knowing. Children aren`t taught to say "I don`t know," and honesty in this form is rarely modeled for them. They too often see adults avoiding questions and fabricating answers, out of either embarrassment or fear, and this comes at a price. When children are embarrassed by or afraid of the feeling of not knowing, they are preoccupied with escaping their discomfort, rather than being motivated to learn. This robs them of the joy of curiosity. Let`s celebrate the feelings of awe and wonder in our children, as the foundation for all learning. Let`s teach children to say "I don`t know" and help them understand the power behind it. Let`s talk to them about how it feels to not know something. And, finally, let`s be honest with children about the limits of our own knowledge.

Annaka Harris

The people we consider successful in our society are all people that seize every moment.

The measure of how free a society is is not how it treats its good, obedient, compliant citizens, but how it treats its dissidents and those who resist orthodoxy.

Glenn Greenwald

All of us lie in some way. It is a precondition for society to function, that we lie a little bit. You can view it as a form of consideration. The truth is, in a way, very self-centred.

John Ajvide Lindqvist

No human mind can comprehend all the knowledge which guides the actions of society.

Friedrich Hayek

We live in a society absolutely dependent on science and technology and yet have cleverly arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. That's a clear prescription for disaster.

Carl Sagan

To all the girls that think you`re fat because you`re not a size zero, you`re the beautiful one, its society who`s ugly.

Marilyn Monroe

Why should society feel responsible only for the education of children, and not for the education of all adults of every age?

Erich Fromm

To educate a man in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society.

Theodore Roosevelt

It`s things like Wikipedia that help us to advance as a society and help us to accelerate our evolution. If you`re a researcher and you need some answer to something, and in today`s world you can find it this quickly, it allows you to develop whatever you are doing much faster.

Kim Dotcom

A society has no chance of success if its women are uneducated.

Khaled Hosseini
