Sometimes you need to let go of the person you think you are, in order to become the person you are meant to be.
If life in itself were a valuable possession and decidedly preferable to non-existence, the gate need not be occupied by such terrible guards as death and its terrors. But who would persevere in life as it is, if death were less frightful? And who could even so much as endure the thought of death, if life were a joy?
God doesn`t need to punish us. He just grants us a long enough life to punish ourselves.
One day you do meet a man who kisses you and you can`t breathe around it and you realize you don`t need air. Oxygen is trivial. Desire makes life happen. Makes it matter. Makes everything worth it. Desire is life. Hunger to see the next sunrise or sunset. To touch the one you love. To try again.
Some people need a red carpet rolled out in front of them in order to walk forward into friendship. They can`t see the tiny outstretched hands all around them, everywhere, like leaves on trees.
If something doesn`t work exactly right, or maybe needs some special treatment, you don`t just throw it away. Everything can`t be fully operational all the time. Sometimes, we need to have the patience to give something the little nudge it needs.
We need, in love, to practice only this:
letting each other go. For holding on
comes easily; we do not need to learn it.
All you really need to know for the moment is that the universe is a lot more complicated than you might think, even if you start from a position of thinking it`s pretty damn complicated in the first place.
We need the possibility of escape as surely as we need hope; without it the life of the cities would drive all men into crime or drugs or psychoanalysis.
The more we associate experience with cash value, the more we think that money is what we need to live. And the more we associate money with life, the more we convince ourselves that we`re too poor to buy our freedom.
If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.
It`s always necessary to know when a stage of one`s life has ended. If you stubbornly cling to it after the need has passed, you lose the joy and meaning of the rest.
You don't write because someone sets assignments! You write because you need to write, or because you hope someone will listen, or because writing will mend something broken inside you, or bring something back to life.
Every reform, however necessary, will by weak minds be carried to an excess, that itself will need reforming.
